Sightlines

About This EP

This EP was the first time I worked with a producer— Brian Chan, a friend of mine from university and a really gifted musician and producer.

Sightlines was a song I re-wrote like ten times. What it ended up sounding like is nothing like how it began. To me, the song is inviting romantic intimacy— I want to solve my lovers mystery, I want to know them and feel close.

We Used To Live is my attempt at a pop-smash. At the time I was listening to a lot of Calvin Harris and wanted to try to write something with a big chorus… :D

Steam Roller is quiet and sad. It’s about feeling defeated and tired of the world.

Exploding Boy is meant to sound shadowy and angry. I always pictured it about someone who feels alienated and lashes out at the world.

I always felt like I was trying to channel Vampire Weekend in Later On. Lyrics from this song were used for The Grip of A Knot, a play written and directed by my friend Kyla Ferrier.

Lyrics

Sightlines

Lay me out like a river
Break on me like a wave crash
Push off from these tidal shores
Pull me out into deep waters
I’m gonna solve your mystery

Break out across my borders
Into unknown provinces
Turn me blind and turn me dumb
And I’m not gonna turn from you
Unlock that hidden door

In the moonlight.
With the lights out.
The holy rush.
The last stop.
And we know it.
And we call it.
And we feel it
inwards.

I can see my breathe.
In the faded light.
In the midnight air.
On this windless night.
Extend you hand.
Cut the lights,
cut the sound,
turn me blind,
turn me dumb
turn me around.

Maybe we could start again oh
Keep close in the pocket of desire
Ride the rivers current
Let it lead us to the ocean

We Used To Live For It

Stretch out and move
Call out the sun
Call out your brothers
Call off the night
I like the sounds
I like the mood
I like your tone
when you told me

we used to live for it, we used to live for it
we used to live, used to live, now we scream for it
we used to live for it, we used to live for it
we used to live, baby, we used to live for it

Run my hand
Along your length
Over horizons,
To where you end
Stretch ourselves
over the world
Know this as;
a freeing thing

we used to live for it, we used to live for it
we used to live, used to live, now we scream for it
we used to live for it, we used to live for it
we used to live, baby, we used to live for it

Loves calls you forth; like a spring from the earth, the earth
Face up, chest out, hands in supplication, supplication

Stretch out and move
Call out the sun
Call out your brothers
Call off the night
I like the sounds
I like the mood
I like your tone
when you told me

Steam Roller

The river flowed backwards, drained the lake dry
The sun hid behind the moon, the day had a deep orange glow

Oh river deep
Oh sky of glass
Is it all just a waste?
Of falling tide
Oh reaching tree
I am tired

Stayed in bed this morning, watched TV
They saw grew a full oak tree in one week

Oh river deep
Oh sky of glass
Is it all just a waste?
Of falling tide
Oh reaching tree
I am tired

You don’t think about me you just steam roll me
I don’t occupy your mind you just steam roll me

Exploding Boy

Fading view
Of the night
When the air went out the room
Out the door
In the cold
Something stood underexposed

Crescent moon
Overhead
I did not notice it
Shadow dark
Shadow low
Underneath the streetlight glow

Beat the restless out of me
Ground me into the earth
Pave over my heart
Show me where I can start
Drag me from my room
Teach me how to breathe
Pull me by my roots
Drag me from the sea

The spirit moved
Shook my sleep
Shook my heart
Somewhere deep
Wrestled me down
Takes me out
Sits unresolved

Exploding boy
Explodinug hear
Out across the midnight sky
Broken hand
Reaches out
Searches for something pure
Christ this room
Is a fire
And it’s burning itself out
Dim the lights
Bring me out
Push against the exhausting night

Beat the restless out of me
Ground me into the earth
Pave over my heart
Show me where I can start
Drag me from my room
Teach me how to breathe
Pull me by my roots
Drag me from the sea

The spirit moved
Shook my sleep
Shook my heart
Somewhere deep
Wrestled me down
Takes me out
Sits unresolved
Within itself
Pulls me within
Borrows in me
Unresolved
Jangling
Cause if they gonna come
Just let them come
It’s not what you need
It’s not your fire
Shot right through me like a fall from the start
Your soul is on fire and fell in your heart
Left me stand unresolved, unrestrained
The spirit moved in me, the spirit moved in me, then it’s gone!

Later On

Step out of the car
Across the yard
Step over the fence
It won’t follow you

All the positions you held in your time,
Contorted poses grow dust in the light,
Like the grip of a knot or the false of a strained held smile

Held figure in front of the bedroom window
Backlit by a fading red and orange glow
Like the grip of a knot or the fade of a century
Like the grip of a knot or the fade of a century
