The River

About This Song

I was projecting myself far into the future when I wrote this song: imagining how it will be when Sarah and I have to trust our 2-year-old daughter Charlotte to navigate the world on her own.

The song is a reminder to Charlotte and I that although I may not want to let her go — I will do my best to let her go and remind her that she is capable of doing life on her own.

Though, hey — Sarah and I will always be there if she needs us too 😊.

Lyrics

If you gonna sneak off to the side where no one knows
I won’t always rush to bring you home
And you may find yourself all alone
Sentimental emotion burns inside of you and me
I’ve never been good at letting go
But I do my best to let you know

The river is wide
The river is wide
But I think you can cross
It’s so much to hold
So much to hold
For someone on their own
But maybe you’ve been waiting to be told:

If it gets easier to be out on your own
It isn’t strange to want to be alone
Hard to be seen, hard to be known
Cause you don’t need permission to walk among the trees
They will get smaller as you grow
And you may find yourself in a home

The river is wide
The river is wide
But I think you can cross
It’s so much to hold
So much to hold
For someone on their own
But maybe you’ve been waiting to be told:

But maybe you’ve waiting to be told:
Have you been waiting to be told?
Have you been waiting to be told?
Have you been waiting to be told?
That you can do this on your own.
